TATA IPL 2026, Match 63: CSK vs SRH – Match Report

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured a highly crucial five-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 63 of the TATA IPL 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Executing a perfectly paced run chase on a challenging Chepauk surface, the visitors hunted down a target of 181 with an entire over to spare. The triumph carried massive implications for the tournament standings, as it officially confirmed Sunrisers Hyderabad's qualification for the playoffs and simultaneously punched the playoff ticket for the Gujarat Titans.

Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to bat first in front of a packed home crowd. The hosts started with aggressive intent as Sanju Samson took on the new ball. Samson raced to a brisk 27 off just 13 deliveries, playing strokes all around the dial, before SRH skipper Pat Cummins provided the vital early breakthrough by dismissing him. Young Urvil Patel briefly continued the onslaught, smashing two sixes in his first three deliveries, but was cleverly outfoxed by a well-disguised slower ball from Sakib Hussain for 13 off 8.

The innings encountered severe turbulence during the middle overs. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled to find his timing, managing a highly uncharacteristic 15 off 21 balls without a single boundary before becoming Cummins' second victim. Despite a quickfire 32 off 19 balls from Kartik Sharma, CSK found themselves in a precarious position at 100 for 4.

Recognizing the need for a recovery, Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube shifted gears to stitch together a crucial partnership. Brevis played a sparkling knock, contributing 44 off 27 deliveries, while Dube anchored the other end with a solid 26. However, the SRH bowling attack maintained immense discipline at the death. Pat Cummins was exceptional, returning stellar figures of 3 for 28 in his four overs. The Super Kings were ultimately restricted to a par total of 180 for 7 in their 20 overs.

Chasing 181, Sunrisers Hyderabad required a steady foundation to navigate the spin threat at Chepauk. Ishan Kishan provided exactly that, playing a wonderfully constructed anchor innings. The elegant southpaw compiled a magnificent 70 from 47 deliveries, rotating the strike seamlessly and punishing loose deliveries with seven boundaries and three sixes. Abhishek Sharma provided early support with a handy 26 off 21 balls before falling to the CSK spinners.

The chase, however, was fundamentally defined by the sheer destructive power of Heinrich Klaasen. Entering the crease during the middle overs, the South African wicketkeeper-batter launched a high-octane assault that completely took the game away from the home side. Klaasen bludgeoned a devastating 47 off just 26 balls, featuring six fours and two massive sixes. His strike rate of 180.77 effectively neutralized the threat of the Chennai bowlers and drastically reduced the required run rate. His innings eventually ended to a lightning fast stumping by Sanju Samson.

While Mukesh Choudhary (2 for 36) and Anshul Kamboj (1 for 46) tried to induce a late collapse by picking up a few wickets, the damage had already been done. Sunrisers Hyderabad comfortably navigated the closing stages, crossing the finish line at 181 for 5 in exactly 19 overs. Ishan Kishan was adjudged the Player of the Match for his match-winning knock.
