TATA IPL 2026, Match 17: PBKS vs SRH – Match Report

Punjab Kings (PBKS) produced a statement chase at Mullanpur, gunning down 220 with authority to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets and seven balls to spare in Match 17 of TATA IPL 2026.

Put in to bat, SRH came out breathing fire. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head tore into the PBKS attack from ball one, racing to 105/0 in the powerplay — the third-joint highest powerplay total in IPL history. The duo added 120 in just eight overs, with Abhishek leading the charge with a stunning 74 off 28 balls, while Head chipped in with a brisk 38 off 23.

At that stage, a 230-plus total looked inevitable. But Punjab Kings found a way back, and it came from an unlikely source. Shashank Singh struck twice in the ninth over to remove both openers in quick succession, halting SRH’s charge and shifting momentum.

From there, the innings lost its earlier fluency. In 10 overs after the powerplay, SRH managed just 77 runs for three wickets, unable to sustain the tempo set by their openers. Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen attempted to rebuild, adding 47 off 33 balls, but Kishan’s dismissal — courtesy of an unbelievable catch by Marco Jansen at deep mid-wicket off Arshdeep Singh — proved another turning point.

Klaasen made 39 off 33 balls while Aniket Verma’s brief 18 off nine provided a late spark. However, SRH never quite regained momentum, managing only 50 runs in the six overs after Kishan’s dismissal. From 105/0 in six overs, they finished with 219/6.

In response, Punjab Kings came out with intent, mirroring SRH’s aggression. Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya launched a counterattack of their own, powering PBKS to 93 for no loss in the powerplay.

Prabhsimran set the early tone, smashing 36 off 15 balls when PBKS were 55/0 after four overs. Arya then took over, accelerating dramatically from 19 off nine to 51 off 18 by the end of the sixth over. Both openers brought up scintillating half-centuries before falling soon after — Arya for 57 off 20 balls, followed by Prabhsimran for 51 off 25.

Cooper Connolly’s brief stay ended soon after, but unlike SRH, PBKS didn’t lose their way in the middle overs. That’s what their captain, Shreyas Iyer, ensured after walking in at number four.

Iyer stitched together a decisive 69-run stand off 35 balls with Nehal Wadhera for the fourth wicket. While Wadhera played a supporting role with 14 off 14, Iyer dominated the partnership, blasting 54 off just 21 balls during that phase. By the time Wadhera departed, the equation had been reduced to a manageable 23 off 23 balls.

Iyer carried on to finish the job, remaining unbeaten on a superb 69 off 33 balls — an innings that blended control with calculated aggression. Shashank Singh provided the finishing touch alongside him, staying not out on 16 off nine balls.

Left-arm wrist-spinner Shivang Kumar was the standout performer for SRH, picking 3/33, while Harsh Dubey was their only other bowler to get into the wickets column (1/38).

The win keeps Punjab Kings unbeaten this season, with three victories and one no-result in four games. SRH, meanwhile, are left to rue what could have been, slipping to sixth on the points table with just one win from four outings.
