TATA IPL 2026, Match 27: SRH vs CSK – Match Report
18 Apr, 2026
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) held their nerve in a tight finish to defeat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 10 runs in Match 27 of TATA IPL 2026 in Hyderabad, successfully defending 194 on the back of a collective bowling effort.
SRH were off to a flyer after being put in to bat. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head came out with intent, racing to 75/0 in just 5.4 overs. Abhishek was the aggressor, smashing 59 off 22 balls, while Head played a more measured hand for his 23 off 20. The opening stand was worth 75 off 34 balls, but the momentum briefly stalled when Mukesh Choudhary struck twice in two deliveries, dismissing Head and Ishan Kishan — the latter for a first-ball duck — as SRH ended the powerplay at 75/2.

CSK tightened things further when Jamie Overton removed Abhishek soon after with a clever off-cutter, leaving SRH at 93/3 in eight overs. With the visitors clawing their way back, Heinrich Klaasen stepped in to rebuild.

Klaasen played the anchor’s role to perfection, stitching together useful partnerships with Aniket Verma, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Salil Arora. He was the dominant partner in each stand, ensuring the innings didn’t lose direction. Yet, he scored 59 off 39 balls at a strike rate of 151.3. It proved crucial in taking SRH to 177/6 in 17.2 overs and setting the platform for a competitive finish. SRH eventually posted 194/8, with no other batter crossing 25 besides Abhishek and Klaasen.
For CSK, Overton was impressive through the middle overs, finishing with 3/37, while Anshul Kamboj starred at the death with 3/22. The pair combined to pull things back significantly, with SRH managing just 31/4 in the final four overs.
In reply, CSK’s chase never quite found sustained momentum despite flashes of promise. Sanju Samson fell early in the second over, mistiming a pull off Nitish Kumar Reddy. Ayush Mhatre then injected life into the chase, racing to 30 off just 12 balls and powering CSK to 60/1 in four overs.
However, Mhatre’s knock was cut short in an unfortunate fashion. After pulling his hamstring, he struggled to run and was dismissed soon after for 30 off 13, handing Reddy his second wicket. The early burst had set the tone, but CSK couldn’t build on it.
Ruturaj Gaikwad fell immediately after, miscuing his first ball against Eshan Malinga, further denting the chase. Sarfaraz Khan and Matt Short attempted to rebuild with a 46-run stand, and at the halfway mark, CSK were well placed, needing 84 off 60 balls with seven wickets in hand.
But SRH struck back again. Sarfaraz fell in the 11th over, and wickets began to tumble regularly thereafter. Dewald Brevis departed for a duck, while Short never quite found his rhythm, making 34 off 30 balls. Shivam Dube’s 21 off 16 balls wasn’t enough to ease the pressure, as the required rate kept climbing.

CSK needed 46 off the final four overs, but disciplined bowling from SRH shut the door. The 17th over yielded just six runs, and the 20th only seven, leaving CSK 10 runs short at the end.
Eshan Malinga led the bowling effort with 3/29 and was named Player of the Match for his key strikes, including Gaikwad, Sarfaraz and Short. Nitish Kumar Reddy bowled his full four-over quota in IPL for the first time, delivering figures of 2/31, while Sakib Hussain and Shivang Kumar chipped in with one wicket each.
The win takes Sunrisers Hyderabad to the fourth spot on the points table with three wins in six matches. CSK, meanwhile, slip to seventh, with two wins from six games, left to rue missed opportunities in a chase that was within reach.
