02 Apr, 2026
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) produced a complete, all-round performance to secure a resounding 65-run victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens. In Match 6 of the TATA IPL 2026, SRH posted a mammoth 226 for 8 before their disciplined bowling attack dismantled the hosts for 161. Notably, this comprehensive triumph makes Sunrisers Hyderabad the first team this season to successfully defend a total, breaking the early tournament trend of chasing teams dominating the results.

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane, playing his 200th TATA IPL game, won the toss and elected to field first, hoping to utilise the evening conditions in Kolkata. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma immediately went on the offensive, neutralising the KKR attack. The duo unleashed absolute fireworks, powering the visitors to a staggering 84 for 1 inside the Powerplay.

The highlight of the early phase was a highly anticipated matchup between Abhishek Sharma and mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Abhishek went into sheer beast mode, fearlessly taking on the spinner to completely disrupt his rhythm. Varun ultimately conceded 31 runs in his two overs without a wicket. Abhishek blazed to a 21-ball 48, while Head laid a similarly destructive foundation with a breathtaking 46 off just 21 deliveries.
Following the blistering start, Heinrich Klaasen took on the responsibility of anchoring the innings. The powerful South African displayed excellent game awareness, scoring a solid 52 off 35 balls. He built a crucial partnership with young Nitish Kumar Reddy, who played a highly impactful cameo of 39 from 24 deliveries.

Despite the constant onslaught, Blessing Muzarabani delivered an outstanding spell for the hosts. The tall pacer stood out amidst the high scoring, utilising his hit-the-deck abilities to claim exceptional figures of 4 for 41. Vaibhav Arora (2 for 47) and Kartik Tyagi (1 for 48) chipped in, but a late push ensured SRH finished with a daunting 226 on the board.
Chasing 227, the Knight Riders needed an explosive start, and Finn Allen provided exactly that. The New Zealander went all-in from ball one, unleashing sheer carnage with a 7-ball 28, striking at an astronomical rate of 400.00. However, young spinner Harsh Dubey showed immense character. After being hit for a boundary, Dubey bravely tossed the ball up and immediately won the battle against Allen, dismissing the dangerous opener to provide SRH a massive breakthrough.
While Angkrish Raghuvanshi impressed once again with a fluid 52 off 29 balls and Rinku Singh fought hard for his 35 off 25, the KKR chase was severely hampered by a devastating comedy of errors. Miscommunications between the wickets led to absolute chaos, halting their momentum entirely and resulting in crucial wickets falling at the wrong time.

Once the partnerships were broken, the Sunrisers' bowlers capitalised brilliantly. Veteran Jaydev Unadkat led a defensive masterclass, utilising his pace variations to perfection to claim 3 for 21 in his three overs. Nitish Kumar Reddy (2 for 17) and Eshan Malinga (2 for 14) also delivered stellar, highly economical spells. Despite a brief, two-six cameo from Sunil Narine (12 off 4), KKR crumbled under the mounting required run rate and were bowled out for 161 in exactly 16 overs.
Player of the Match Nitish Kumar Reddy had a phenomenal dual impact on the game, backing up his quick-fire 39 (162.50 SR) with an incredibly tight spell of 2 for 17 in his two overs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have laid down a serious marker with this victory, showcasing both their top-order firepower and defensive bowling precision. They will look to carry this massive momentum forward. Meanwhile, the Kolkata Knight Riders will return to the drawing board to address their concerns before their next clash.
