Scenarios for the playoff places in VIVO IPL 2016

Last day of the group matches and we still have two playoff places yet to be filled in. With four teams in contention for the playoffs, it is going to be a Sensational Sunday.

This is how the things stand and what teams need to do to qualify for the playoffs:

Gujarat Lions

They are currently number one in the Points Table and at worst will finish at number two (if Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Kolkata Knight Riders). So, they don’t have anything to worry about.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Match left:

vs Kolkata Knight Riders at Kolkata

Sunrisers are already through to the Playoffs, but a win against KKR today will ensure that they finish as number one side, with Gujarat Lions being the number two.

If their match is washed-out, SRH will still end at number two.

If they lose to KKR, SRH can still finish at number two, if the loss is not a big one and then Delhi Daredevils beat RCB by a small margin.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Match left:

vs Delhi Daredevils at Raipur

A win against DD will assure them a place in Playoffs even if KKR beat SRH. This is because of their superior NRR.

RCB are so far ahead on NRR that even if KKR thrash SRH by a huge margin and RCB register a narrow win, RCB will still remain ahead of KKR.

If SRH beat KKR, RCB will be through even if they lose to DD by a very big margin.

However, if SRH-KKR match is washed-out and RCB lose to DD, then RCB will be eliminated.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Match left:

vs Sunrisers Hyderabad at Kolkata

If they beat Sunrisers, they are sure of a playoff place.

If they lose to Sunrisers, they can reach playoffs only if the loss is a small one and then RCB beat DD, so that they remain ahead of DD and MI on NRR.

If their match is washed-out, they will be eliminated.

KKR can finish among top two teams only if they beat SRH by about 40 runs and DD beat RCB by not more than 80 runs.

Mumbai Indians

With 14 points and a negative run-rate, Mumbai Indians are in a tight spot. The only way they can reach playoffs is if SRH beat KKR by 40+ runs and RCB beat DD by 10+ runs. In such a scenario, MI will tie with KKR and DD with 14 points and will sneak through on better NRR.

Delhi Daredevils

Match left:

vs Royal Challengers Bangalore at Raipur

A win will take them through to the Playoffs.

If SRH beat KRR, DD can sneak through even if they lose to RCB, provided SRH register a big win and DD don’t lose by a big margin.

If SRH-KKR match is washed-out, DD will have to beat RCB to qualify.

DD have the advantage of playing the last league match and they will know exactly what they need to do.

Rising Pune Supergiants & Kings XI Punjab

Both these sides are out of the playoff race.
