TATA IPL 2026, Match 54: RCB v MI – Match Report

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) orchestrated one of the most astonishing victories in tournament history, edging past the Mumbai Indians (MI) by two wickets in a chaotic last-ball thriller for Match 54 of the TATA IPL 2026. In a nerve-wracking contest at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, a heavily-cramping Krunal Pandya resurrected the Bengaluru chase with a heroic 73 before the lower order scrambled for 15 runs in a dramatic final over.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to bowl first on a tricky Raipur surface that offered variable bounce and early swing. Veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar immediately justified the decision with a masterclass in new-ball bowling. Spitting venom and exploiting the conditions flawlessly, Bhuvneshwar dismantled the Mumbai top order inside the Powerplay. He sent Ryan Rickelton packing in his opening over, before returning to deliver a devastating double-strike, dismissing Rohit Sharma (22 off 10) and the dangerous Suryakumar Yadav (0) to leave MI reeling at 34 for 3 in the fourth over.

With the innings threatening to capsize, Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma launched a crucial counter-attack. The duo stitched together a stabilizing 82-run partnership off 57 deliveries, maneuvering the middle overs with intelligent strike rotation and calculated aggression. Naman Dhir compiled a brisk 47 from 32 balls (laced with 5 fours and 2 sixes), while Varma anchored the innings with a superbly crafted 57 off 42 deliveries.

However, once Dhir was dismissed, the RCB bowlers successfully restricted the run flow at the death. Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned to claim the prized wicket of Varma, concluding his spell with magnificent Player of the Match figures of 4 for 23. A disciplined final over from Rasikh Salam yielded just five runs, restricting the Mumbai Indians to a seemingly sub-par, yet competitive, 166 for 7.

Chasing 167, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru endured a disastrous start of their own. Deepak Chahar found early swing to dismiss talisman Virat Kohli for a duck, before removing Devdutt Padikkal shortly after. When South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch struck on his very first delivery to bounce out captain Rajat Patidar, RCB found themselves in deep peril at 28 for 3.

The responsibility fell on the shoulders of Krunal Pandya, who was promoted up the order. Battling through severe cramps that left him hobbling between the wickets, Pandya played the innings of his life. He showcased immense grit, compiling a spectacular 73 from 46 deliveries. Krunal aggressively targeted the MI spinners, notably smashing Allah Ghazanfar for two consecutive sixes in the 18th over, before a stunning boundary catch by Tilak Varma ended his stay.

Meanwhile, Corbin Bosch (4 for 26) continuously dragged Mumbai back into the contest. The Proteas pacer executed a brilliant double-strike in the 16th over to remove Jitesh Sharma and Tim David on successive deliveries, exposing the RCB tail.

The match culminated in a wildly unpredictable final over bowled by young Raj Angad Bawa, with RCB requiring 15 runs. The over was marred by extreme pressure, featuring wides and a crucial no-ball. With the equation reduced to 9 runs needed off 3 balls, Bhuvneshwar Kumar proved his worth with the bat, dispatching a vital six into the stands. The drama peaked on the very last delivery, with RCB needing two runs to win. Rasikh Salam struck the ball firmly down the pitch, where it unfortunately deflected off the bowler Bawa towards long-on, allowing the batters to scramble back for a desperate, match-winning double.
