TATA IPL 2026, Match 44: CSK v MI – Match Report

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) produced a clinical all-round performance to outclass Mumbai Indians (MI) by eight wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Match 44 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 in Chennai, to complete the double of victories over their great rivals this season. A disciplined bowling effort led by Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad restricted MI to a below-par total, before half-centuries from Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma ensured a comfortable chase for the home side.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, MI got off to a brisk start despite the absence of Rohit Sharma. Ryan Rickelton led the early charge with a series of aggressive strikes, helping MI race past the 50-run mark in the powerplay. However, the introduction of Noor Ahmad turned the tide as he removed Rickelton to halt the momentum.

Naman Dhir and Surya Kumar Yadav kept the momentum going with some brisk batting, but debutant Ramakrishna Ghosh, who earlier took a great catch, dismissed Surya Kumar to get his maiden IPL wicket.

Noor then came back to get the wicket of Tilak Varma and end with impressive figures of 2/26 in four overs.

Dhir played a lone hand in the middle order, scoring a gritty 57 off 37 balls to keep the scoreboard ticking. But Chennai’s end-overs specialists, particularly Anshul Kamboj (3/28), proved too difficult to get away.

Kamboj’s three-wicket burst, which included the crucial scalp of MI skipper Hardik Pandya, triggered a late-innings collapse. From a position of promise, Mumbai struggled to find the boundary in the final overs, finishing on a modest 159/7.

Chasing 160, CSK faced an early setback when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Sanju Samson (11) in the second over after Samson got a reprieve on the very first ball of that over courtesy of Will Jacks’ dropping a catch at slip. However, CSL captain Ruturaj Gaikwad took charge of the proceedings, anchoring the innings with a composed 67*(48). He found an able partner in Urvil Patel (24 off 12), who provided a quick cameo to ensure the required run rate remained under control.

The turning point of the chase was the partnership between Gaikwad and Impact Player Kartik Sharma. Sharma played with great freedom, taking on the MI spinners, including a glorious sequence of boundaries off Allah Ghazanfar in the 17th over to stamp his authority. He reached his maiden IPL half-century in the 18th over to a huge round of applause from the CSK fans.

The duo rotated strike with ease and capitalised on loose deliveries, never allowing the MI bowlers to build pressure. Kartik finished the game in style, ramping Trent Boult for a boundary to seal the victory with 11 balls to spare.

This is the third time CSK has achieved a league double over MI in an IPL season after 2014 and 2023.
