When Pandya brothers rocked Wankhede

If one does it with the bat, the other does with the ball. Together the Pandya brothers make for a terrific combo. Krunal is a left-hander and bowls spin, Hardik, a right-hander, relies on pace. They run hard and are excellent fielders, factors that should delight any captain and team management. On Sunday night at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, the two put on a show as the home team registered a thrilling win over Kolkata Knight Riders in their first home match of the VIVO IPL 2017.
Bowling first, Krunal removed - Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan -three of the five specialist Indian batsmen in the KKR line-up. Hardik contributed in his own way by taking two smart catches before finishing the job with a scintillating 29 off just 11 balls as MI secured a four-wicket win. Hardik shared a 41-run stand in just 14 balls with Man of the Match Nitish Rana (50 from 29 balls). MI needed an improbable 49 runs from three overs and 11 from six when Hardik secured a win in style with a boundary. Fittingly, Krunal made a dash from the dugout and enveloped his brother in a warm hug.
Post the dramatic finish, the two revisited the memorable game for iplt20.com.
Hardik Pandya: What was going through your mind when you were given the ball in the fifth over?
Krunal Pandya: I back myself in every game. Usually on the Wankhede pitch, the ball comes nicely onto the bat and I was looking to vary my pace. Yes, in the last game I didn’t do too well and was going through the motions. I rectified those mistakes and executed my plans today and it went well.
Hardik: There was someone who took those catches that resulted in those wickets.
Krunal: Definitely! It was only because of you. The moment the ball was hit towards you, I felt safe.
Krunal: Let’s talk about your batting. Tell us how I inspire you?
Hardik: Yes, you keep backing me and keep reminding me that I have to finish the game. This was the right opportunity for me to do that and get a win for Mumbai Indians. I am pretty happy that I could do it. God has been very kind.
Krunal: When you went out to bat, MI needed 60 runs in under four overs. What was your plan? Let me tell you I was confident that you would finish the game.
Hardik: I wasn’t thinking much. I knew the bowlers would be under pressure. Yes, for a couple of balls I was under pressure as they were on top. Eventually, I knew that victory was just one shot away. I knew if I connect one, I will be able to put them under pressure and they will have to try out something new, something that they are not used to. I was lucky.
Krunal: But I was definitely under pressure.
Hardik: That is usually the story with us. When I bat, he feels the pressure and when he is batting, I am under pressure.
