TATA IPL 2026, Match 66: GT v CSK – Match Report
21 May, 2026
Gujarat Titans (GT) delivered a statement performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium, thrashing Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 89 runs in Match 66 of TATA IPL 2026 to strengthen their push for a top-two finish and officially knock CSK out of the playoffs race.
Chasing a crucial win that would improve their chances of securing two shots at the final through Qualifier 1, Gujarat Titans produced a complete all-round performance, piling up 229/4 before bowling CSK out for 140.
After being put in to bat first, GT built their innings on a dominant opening partnership between Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill. The pair added 125 runs for the first wicket, taking complete control of the powerplay and middle overs.

Sudharsan continued his outstanding season with 84 off 53 balls, bringing up his fifth consecutive IPL fifty. He mixed timing with controlled aggression, striking seven fours and four sixes in another polished innings. At the other end, captain Gill played with authority, smashing 64 off just 37 deliveries, including seven boundaries and three sixes.
By the time the stand was broken, GT had already laid the perfect platform for a massive total. Jos Buttler then applied the finishing touch with a blistering unbeaten 57 off 27 balls. His late assault, featuring five fours and four sixes, ensured GT surged past the 220-mark and finished with an imposing 229/4.

CSK’s bowling attack struggled for answers throughout. Spencer Johnson and Anshul Kamboj picked up a wicket each but were expensive, conceding 47 and 57 runs respectively as GT’s top order dominated every phase of the innings.
If GT’s batting set the game up, Mohammed Siraj’s opening spell effectively ended the contest.
Siraj struck with the very first ball of the chase, dismissing Sanju Samson for a duck. He then removed Gaikwad, who had briefly threatened with two sixes, bowling him with a sharp delivery that sneaked under the bat. Urvil Patel followed soon after as Siraj ripped through the top order and crushed any early momentum CSK hoped to build.

The collapse deepened quickly. CSK lost four wickets inside the powerplay and were reduced to 72/5 soon after, with run-outs compounding the chaos. One of them came through a direct hit from Gill, further underlining GT’s dominance in the field.
Shivam Dube attempted to resist, but the chase never truly recovered after the early blows. GT’s bowlers kept tightening the screws, ensuring there was no route back for the hosts.
Kagiso Rabada fittingly wrapped up the innings. First, he had Noor Ahmad caught and bowled with a sharp short delivery before dismissing Spencer Johnson off the very next ball, the edge confirmed on review, to complete the rout.
The result carried added significance given the recent playoff history between these two sides, including the memorable 2023 IPL final and Qualifier 1. But unlike those tense encounters, this was entirely one-sided.
For GT, it was the ideal performance ahead of the playoffs — their top order firing in unison before the pace attack dismantled the opposition. For CSK, meanwhile, the heavy defeat marked the end of their campaign, with their elimination now officially confirmed.
