TATA IPL 2026, Match 22: CSK vs KKR – Match Report

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) delivered a clinical all-round performance to defeat the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 32 runs in Match 22 of the TATA IPL 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. In a clash of two teams desperate for momentum, the hosts successfully defended a competitive total of 192 for 5, effectively strangling KKR’s chase through an impeccable exhibition of spin bowling.

With this triumph, the five-time champions secured consecutive victories for the first time in two years, injecting much-needed life into their campaign, while Kolkata Knight Riders remain winless after four outings this season with one being washed out.

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and elected to field first, hoping to exploit any early assistance from the Chepauk surface. However, the Super Kings' top order quickly dictated terms. Youngster Ayush Mhatre provided an explosive start, dismantling the new ball attack with a brisk 38 off just 17 deliveries. Mhatre struck six boundaries and two sixes, setting an aggressive tone early on.

Sanju Samson anchored the innings beautifully from the other end. The wicketkeeper-batter compiled a stroke-filled 48 off 32 balls, laced with four boundaries and three maximums, falling just short of a well-deserved half-century. Following Mhatre's departure, Dewald Brevis stepped up with a crucial 39 off 28 balls, forming a vital partnership with Samson to keep the scoreboard ticking. Sarfaraz Khan also chipped in with a handy 25 off 19 balls in the middle overs.

The KKR bowling unit fought back in the latter half of the innings to prevent the total from breaching the 200-run mark. Veteran spinner Sunil Narine applied the brakes brilliantly, conceding only 21 runs in his four overs and taking a wicket, while young speedster Kartik Tyagi utilized his pace variations effectively to return figures of 2 for 35.

Chasing 193 for their first victory of the season, KKR required a stable platform, but the CSK pace attack struck early. Anshul Kamboj removed Finn Allen for just 1 in the very first over. KKR attempted to counter-attack through Sunil Narine (24 off 17) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (27 off 19), but the introduction of spin fundamentally shifted the match.

The night belonged to Noor Ahmad, who completely dismantled the Knight Riders' middle order. The Afghan spinner bowled a mesmerizing spell, dismissing KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane (28 off 22) before sending Rinku Singh and Cameron Green back to the dugout in quick succession. He consistently beat the batters with flight and turn, returning match-winning figures of 3 for 21 and winning the Player of the Match.

Akeal Hosein provided exceptional support from the other end, picking up a wicket and giving away just 26 runs in his full quota. While Ramandeep Singh (35 off 23 balls) and Rovman Powell (31 not out off 22 balls) showcased resilience deep in the innings, the required run rate had spiralled entirely out of control. KKR ultimately finished at 160 for 7, falling short by a considerable margin of 32 runs.
