Don’t want batters to get used to a bowler: Morris
19 Apr, 2015
Chris Morris got the vital wicket of Suresh Raina by generating extra bounce, something he has done well consistently. He may have finished with just that one wicket but he bowled 14 dot balls during the various spells he bowled spread across different phases of the innings.
While speaking to iplt20.com after RR’s fifth consecutive win of Pepsi IPL 2015, Morris – who was his team’s most economical bowler of the day - discussed the team’s bowling tactics, his pre-match preparation and performance in the match.
Excerpts from the interview:
How had you prepared for CSK’s power packed batting line-up?
(The plan was to) keep it simple. They are quite a good batting line-up but we just kept things simple. I think we analysed the pitch quite early which helped.
Could you elaborate more on the tactics employed?
The pitch was a little bit slow, so (we had to) take a bit of pace off the ball and (on occasions) bowl the ball cross seam. I’m just happy to be contributing and playing the game.
RR has been rotating their bowlers well, in the process not allowing opposition batsmen to settle down. How is that planned?
I think it’s quite simple. We don’t want the batters to get used to batting against one bowler. Our tactics depend on the different conditions and the wicket. It is very good captaincy and those are smart tactics.
What do you do differently when you bowl upfront and then at the back end?
It’s a lot of hard work. The new ball swings a lot and there are a lot less fielders out of the ring. So it’s a bit harder, but you can get away with it if you hit the right areas. And for bowling in the death, I think it’s a lot of hard work in the nets; you try to hit the cones or hit the feet. There’s a lot of luck involved I think, but also lot of hard work.
How was it bowling against your former team?
It was good fun. It was good to see them at the hotel yesterday. It doesn’t matter who I play for and where I play, I always want to win it.
Three wickets around the powerplay phase has been the key to winning for most teams. So how do you prepare to attack early on and cause damage?
I think (bowling in) T20 cricket doesn’t change as much as people think it does. It is about bowling in good areas and sticking to your tactics. For a bowler sometimes it’s going to come off and sometime it isn’t. Fortunately today it was my turn (to come good).
It was my type of pitch I think. We do a lot of homework on the batters and (analyse) where their weaknesses and strengths are. We played against a good team today; there is a lot of talent (in the CSK side). I am just happy to be coming out on top.
You have worked with Allan Donald. How has your interaction with him helped or influenced your bowling?
Allan is a hero of mine. I wanted to work with him and it was quite nice to be around him. Allan has been in every single situation that one can be in and has a lot of knowledge. Anything the great man can say to me I am going take it in.
