TATA IPL 2026, Match 7: CSK vs PBKS – Match Report

Punjab Kings (PBKS) continued their strong start to TATA IPL 2026, registering a five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a high-scoring contest at the M. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

After winning the toss, PBKS opted to bowl but were made to toil early as CSK recovered well from an early setback. Sanju Samson fell cheaply for 7, but skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and the 18-year-old Ayush Mhatre steadied the innings with an impressive partnership. The duo added 96 runs off just 55 balls, shifting momentum firmly in CSK’s favour.

Mhatre was the aggressor in the stand, showcasing maturity beyond his years with a fluent stroke-filled innings. He raced to 67 off 38 balls during the partnership, while Gaikwad played a supporting role.

The CSK skipper eventually fell for 28 off 22 balls, holing out in the deep off Yuzvendra Chahal as he looked to accelerate. At 110/1 in 11.1 overs, CSK were well placed for a big finish.

Mhatre soon followed in the next over after compiling a superb 73 off 43 balls - the third-highest score in TATA IPL history by a batter before turning 19. Despite losing both set batters in quick succession, CSK maintained their attacking approach in the death overs.

Shivam Dube provided the finishing touch with a composed unbeaten 45 off 27 balls, while Sarfaraz Khan injected momentum with a blistering 32 off just 12 deliveries, striking six fours and a six. Their late surge ensured CSK plundered 99 runs in the remaining 8.5 overs after Gaikwad’s dismissal, finishing with a formidable 209/5, which is their second-highest total against Punjab in IPL history.

For PBKS, Yuzvendra Chahal stood out with a tidy spell of 1/21 in his three overs. Vijaykumar Vyshak picked up two key wickets, dismissing both Mhatre and Sarfaraz, but the rest of the bowling attack struggled to contain the flow of runs.

In response, PBKS came out with aggressive intent. Young opener Priyansh Arya set the tone in sensational fashion, striking five boundaries in the first six balls of his innings. Punjab raced to 55/0 in just four overs, with Arya contributing 33 of those runs.

Arya’s explosive knock came to an end at 39 off just 11 balls (three fours and four sixes), dismissed by Matt Henry with PBKS cruising at 61/1 in 4.2 overs. Prabhsimran Singh, who had initially played second fiddle, then anchored the innings with a steady 43 off 34 balls before being run out in the ninth over.

Cooper Connolly added further impetus with a brisk 38 off 22 balls, but it was skipper Shreyas Iyer who controlled the chase in the middle overs. His well-paced 50 off 29 balls ensured PBKS stayed ahead of the required rate.

CSK kept themselves in the contest with a few tight overs in between but were largely behind in the game. When Iyer and Nehal Wadhera fell off successive deliveries, PBKS needed 24 runs from 17 balls. However, with Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh at the crease, Punjab held their composure to close out the chase comfortably, finishing with five wickets in hand and 17 balls to spare.

Matt Henry (2/54) and Anshul Kamboj (2/43) were the only CSK bowlers to get into the wickets column on a tough night for the hosts.

Priyansh Arya was named Player of the Match for his electrifying start at the top, which laid the foundation for PBKS’ chase. The win marked Punjab Kings’ second consecutive victory to begin their campaign, while Chennai Super Kings are yet to open their account this season.
