Gayle to Virat: ‘Fantastic to share the 10k moment with you’

M20: GL vs RCB – Chris Gayle & Virat Kohli Interview

About 200 kms from Rajkot, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar became the first man to register 10000 runs in Test cricket when he reached the milestone in Ahmedabad against Pakistan in 1987. Nobody back then would have envisaged the game of cricket to be reduced to 20 overs. Even after the shortest format's rapid rise, scaling that same peak that Gavaskar achieved in Tests and Sachin Tendulkar achieved in ODIs seemed unthinkable. But ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle has bossed the shortest format and he breached the 10k figure against Gujarat Lions in match 20 of VIVO IPL 2017. What staggers the mind is the fact that Gayle has scored 7534 runs with the help of 743 sixes and 769 boundaries.

Nothing changed on Tuesday as Gayle lit up the night sky with seven sixes (one travelled over 100 meters) and five fours in his brutal knock of 77 off just 38 balls after Captain Virat Kohli 64 (50b, 7x4, 1x6) set the tempo hitting five boundaries in just the first three overs of the match. The two added 122 runs for the first wicket, becoming the first pair to share 10 century-run stands in the T20 format.

While the pair did separate after tormenting the home team bowlers for 12 overs, it reunited laterfor a special chat. The two modern day masters got together for iplt20.com to put the epic achievements into perspective.

Virat Kohli: Chris, how does it feel to open the innings with me?

Chris Gayle: It’s a great feeling to open the innings with you. It’s an absolute pleasure mate. You’re a legend and you have many more runs to score. It’s a privilege to actually watch you from the other end and to see you score fluently. Well done on your career so far and I wish you many many more from my heart. Seriously.

Virat: It was our 10th 100-run partnership in T20s and it is a record. You got to 10000 runs at an average of 40 and a strike-rate of 149 and 18 hundreds. It is a crazy stat. It has been my privilege to open with you.

How you have managed to be the ‘Universe Boss’ consistently for so many years?

Gayle: It’s fantastic to get to 10000 runs and share that moment with you. We have had a lot of partnerships and it is really great. Also, to be able to play for a great franchise like the RCB is superb. Since I joined this franchise, things have gone great for me as well from a personal point of view, so I am very thankful for that. You guys have been special and it is special to share the dressing room with you. We have a lot of talent, many youngsters and it is good fun. It has been an absolute pleasure.
