TATA IPL 2026, Match 56: GT vs SRH – Match Report
12 May, 2026
Donning their special lavender jerseys to raise cancer awareness, the Gujarat Titans (GT) delivered a masterclass in defending a par total, dismantling the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by a massive 82 runs. A 168-run total on the Ahmedabad surface initially seemed within reach, but an absolutely devastating Powerplay bowling display from Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj blew the Orange Army away, skittling them for just 86 in 14.5 overs. The commanding victory catapults the Titans to the very top of the points table.

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that yielded immediate rewards. The Titans suffered a highly uncharacteristic start, losing skipper Shubman Gill (5 off 7) and the dangerous Jos Buttler (7 off 11) inside the Powerplay. With the team under immense pressure, Nishant Sindhu briefly counter-attacked with a brisk 22 off 14 deliveries (3 fours, 1 six) before departing. The responsibility of resurrecting the innings fell to the ever-reliable Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar. Sudharsan played a brilliantly calculated anchor knock, scoring 61 off 44 balls. He struck five boundaries and two maximums before falling to a sharp catch by Praful Hinge at short third off Sakib Hussain (1 for 27) after attempting a reverse-ramp.

Washington Sundar provided the essential late impetus, switching gears perfectly in the death overs. He brought up a crucial half-century in just 32 balls, finishing his innings with 50 off 33 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and a six. Supported by Jason Holder (11* off 10), the Titans posted a highly competitive 168 for 5.

Chasing 169, the Sunrisers Hyderabad were completely decimated by a fiery Gujarat pace attack. Mohammed Siraj set the tone in the very first over, dismissing the destructive Travis Head for a four-ball duck. However, the defining sequence of the match belonged to Kagiso Rabada. In the second over, Abhishek Sharma charged down the pitch and deposited Rabada for a six. The South African speedster responded with lethal precision two deliveries later. Cramping Abhishek for room, Rabada induced an inside edge that crashed into the stumps, following it up with a highly passionate, fiery send-off. Rabada didn't stop there, quickly removing Ishan Kishan (11 off 7) and Smaran Ravichandran (9) to leave the Sunrisers reeling at 32 for 4. The Orange Army simply had no answers against the moving ball. Jason Holder (3 for 20) and Prasidh Krishna (2 for 23) relentlessly maintained the pressure through the middle overs. SRH captain Pat Cummins provided the only fleeting moment of resistance, smashing 19 off just 9 deliveries (1 four, 2 sixes) before mishitting a pull shot off Prasidh Krishna, smartly caught by Siraj at third man. Rashid Khan (1 for 3 in 0.5 overs) provided the finishing touch, having Praful Hinge stumped by Buttler to wrap up the SRH innings for an abysmal 86.

Kagiso Rabada's spell of 3 for 28 extends his incredible form. He now leads the tournament chart for the most wickets taken during the Powerplay, boasting 13 scalps with the new ball this season. This phenomenal win marks GT's fifth consecutive victory, elevating them straight to the number one spot on the points table. A harsh reality check for Pat Cummins and his men. The heavy defeat damages their NRR and serves as a major wake-up call for their batting unit. Despite the loss, they remain in the thick of the playoff race but must bounce back quickly in their upcoming fixtures to secure a top-two finish.
