TATA IPL 2026, Match 42: GT v RCB – Match Report

The Gujarat Titans (GT) executed a highly disciplined all-round performance to secure a comprehensive four-wicket victory over the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), in Match 42 of the TATA IPL 2026. Playing in front of their home crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Titans' bowling unit relentlessly chipped away at the formidable RCB batting lineup, bowling them out for a sub-par 155. In response, a blistering top-order assault laid the foundation for a successful chase, allowing the hosts to comfortably cross the finish line with 25 deliveries to spare and avenge their previous defeat against the Bengaluru franchise.

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill won the toss and astutely elected to field first, a decision that paid rich dividends as the home bowlers expertly exploited the bounce and pace of the Ahmedabad surface. Virat Kohli provided the visitors with an electric start, racing to 28 off just 13 deliveries with an aggressive display that included taking on Kagiso Rabada before the South African speedster delivered the perfect reply to dismiss him.

From there, the Royal Challengers suffered a severe loss of momentum, registering a middle-order collapse orchestrated by the relentless duo of Arshad Khan and Rashid Khan. Arshad was particularly lethal, returning exceptional figures of 3 for 22 in his 3.2 overs, while the Afghan maestro Rashid squeezed the run-flow entirely, giving away a mere 19 runs in his four overs while picking up two crucial wickets.

Despite a fighting 40 off 24 balls from Devdutt Padikkal, the reigning champions found no substantial partnerships to bail them out. Jason Holder compounded their misery with a spectacular fielding display, holding onto three catches during the innings, including a magnificent diving grab to dismiss RCB skipper Rajat Patidar. Ultimately, a chaotic run-out of Josh Hazlewood ended the innings at 155 in 19.2 overs, marking the very first time the Royal Challengers Bengaluru had been bowled out in the entire 2026 season.

Chasing a modest target of 156, the Gujarat Titans launched a high-octane assault right from the first delivery to put the result beyond any doubt. Captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a breathtaking 43 off just 18 balls, striking at an astounding 238.89, while Jos Buttler provided tremendous firepower from the other end with a destructive 39 off 19 deliveries.

Their explosive opening stand severely dented RCB's hopes, but veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar showcased his immense class to inject brief moments of anxiety into the home camp. Bowling with exceptional control and exploiting the lengths beautifully, Bhuvneshwar spearheaded a mini-comeback, rattling the Titans' middle order to return superb figures of 3 for 28 in his four-over quota. However, the required run rate had already plummeted due to the early onslaught. The ever-reliable Rahul Tewatia stepped up to calm the nerves, compiling an unbeaten 27 from 17 balls. Alongside Rashid Khan, who appropriately finished the game with a commanding boundary, Tewatia navigated the closing stages with ease to take the Gujarat Titans to 158 for 6 in 15.5 overs. This emphatic finish not only secured two crucial points for the Titans but also served as a massive boost to their Net Run Rate as the playoff race intensifies.

Jason Holder was adjudged the Player of the Match for his splendid all-round brilliance.
