In a dominant display of all-round excellence, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a comprehensive 103-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 33 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After Sanju Samson’s breathtaking unbeaten 101 anchored CSK to a massive 207/6, Impact Player Akeal Hosein produced a masterclass in left-arm spin bowling, picking up four wickets to dismantle the home side’s chase.

CSK thus registered their biggest margin of victory (by runs) in TATA IPL.

Opting to bowl first, MI struck early as Allah Ghazanfar removed CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (22) in the third over. However, Sanju Samson took control of proceedings right away.

In a flawless display of hitting, Samson reached his second century of the season, remaining unbeaten on 101 off 54 balls. His innings featured 10 crisp boundaries and six towering sixes that left the Wankhede crowd in awe.

Despite a mid-innings wobble where Allah Ghazanfar (2/25) removed Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis in quick succession to leave CSK at 122/4, Samson found a steady partner in Kartik Sharma (18). The pair added 43 runs for the fifth wicket, allowing Samson to accelerate in the slog overs. A late cameo from Jamie Overton (15 off 7) further helped with the momentum, while Samson smashed two sixes and a four off Krish Bhagat’s final over of the innings to bring up an unbeaten score of 101(54) and propel CSK to 207/6.

The MI chase was rocked in the very first over and never truly recovered. Introduced as the Impact Player, Akeal Hosein produced a sensational opening spell that left the MI top order in tatters. He dismissed Danish Malewar and Naman Dhir in quick succession and by the end of the third over, MI were reeling at 11/3.

Suryakumar Yadav (36 off 30) and Tilak Varma attempted a rescue act. Alongside Tilak Varma (37 off 29), Surya Kumar momentarily arrested the slide with a 60-run stand. However, Akeal returned to dismiss both batters and end with highly impressive figures of 4/17. The pressure remained relentless as Noor Ahmad joined the fray, striking off consecutive deliveries to remove Hardik Pandya and Sherfane Rutherford.

CSK’s pace unit contributed to clinically wrapped up the MI innings. Gurjapneet Singh claimed the final wicket of Jasprit Bumrah to bowl out the home side for 104 in 19 overs. The 103-run margin marked CSK’s most clinical performance so far this season, significantly boosting their net run rate as they climbed up to fifth spot on the points table.
