Preview: Match 16 – DD v MI

Defending champs look to for season’s first win against Daredevils

Mumbai 26 April 2014

Match 16 of Pepsi IPL 2014 will feature the Delhi Daredevils, who wrap their UAE leg of Pepsi IPL 2014, taking on the defending champions Mumbai Indians.

Both teams haven’t had the best of times so far. Delhi Daredevils have a solitary win from four matches – that win came against the Kolkata Knight Riders two matches ago. Post that, they suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Chennai Super Kings and finished one stroke away from a win against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their most recent outing.

Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, have had a forgettable run so far and will want to turn things around quickly. They started the season on a disastrous note, losing to Kolkata Knight Riders by a massive 41 runs, before going down to Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings in their subsequent matches.

The Protagonists

Given how batsmen have flourished so far in this competition, DD will know they need runs from their more-experienced batters. Murali Vijay looked good in the company of Quinton de Kock in the previous match and the pair will be expected to set the ball rolling from the word go. The other batsman that DD will look up to is JP Duminy, who has done plenty of damage with the bat despite being given few balls to face.

MI will look towards the run-machine Michael Hussey and their skipper Rohit Sharma to get the bulk of the runs. Mr. Cricket has had a forgettable run so far, managing only 20 runs in three innings – though he was cleaned up by a peach of a delivery in the last match. Given his experience and versatility, he needs to pull his weight at the top of the innings. Rohit Sharma took his time to get going in his previous match, but MI will take positives from the fact that he did the hard yards and stitched together a useful innings of 50. With confidence having so much to do with performance, MI will be glad that their skipper has runs under his belt.

Notes from Previous match

Delhi Daredevils v Sunrisers Hyderabad: The foremost note in coach Gary Kirsten’s diary will hopefully be about the batting line-up finding the right shape. With the arrival of Kevin Pietersen at the helm and the inclusion of Quinton de Kock, DD now have a very formidable looking line-up. The standout thing that needs addressing is DD’s ability to take wickets – they managed a solitary wicket in the previous match and have only claimed 15 in four games. DD have also paid for their largesse on the field; Manoj Tiwary grassed two catches, while Dinesh Karthik put down a difficult one.

Mumbai Indians v Chennai Super Kings: Four MI batsmen got off to starts but not one stayed on for the final stages of the innings. Having new batsmen at the wicket meant MI were robbed of momentum and only managed 33 runs in the final five overs – 14 of which came in the final over. The fifth bowler’s quota of four overs continues to be a concern for MI; Corey Anderson and Kieron Pollard conceded 33 runs in three matches and pressure from them could have made things difficult for their opponents.

Previous Meetings

Very little separates the Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians where previous clashes between the two teams are concerned. Both teams have won six matches apiece out of 12 previous meetings.

Among the memorable performances in DD-MI matches is Lasith Malinga’s five-wicket haul in IPL 2011 – his first such haul in T20 cricket. Since then, the Sri Lankan has picked up three more five-foes.

Mumbai Indians have hit the fewest boundaries among all teams in Pepsi IPL 2014. In their three matches, they’ve only managed 27 fours and 6 sixes – which account for only 38.1 percent of the runs scored by them.

25 – number of dot balls bowled by Zaheer Khan in the eight overs he has bowled in powerplay this season.

What Next

Mumbai Indians will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next fixture – scheduled at Dubai on April 30. Delhi Daredevils, on the other hand, will fly back home and prepare to host the Rajasthan Royals on May 3.
