CSK players visit world's largest indoor theme park in Abu Dhabi
By IPL Desk
Mumbai 17 April 2014
Abu Dhabi, 17 April 2014: Indian Premiere League’s (IPL) Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad have visited Ferrari World Abu Dhabi – the world’s largest indoor theme park which boasts the world’s fastest rollercoaster Formula Rossa - for some adrenaline pumping speed thrills in the warm-up to their season opening match against Kings XI Punjab at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Cricket Stadium this Friday 2:30pm.
Batsman and bowler Suresh Raina, known for his off-spins, nearly spun off the tracks on the world’s fastest rollercoaster: “Riding the Formula Rossa was very exciting! It definitely got my adrenaline pumping,” enthused Raina. “When we arrived we were all a bit scared to go on the world’s fastest rollercoaster, but riding it was an amazing feeling. Once we’ve won a couple of matches I’ll be back to ride it again.”
The visit to Abu Dhabi was a team first, but for some cricket ‘royals’ it was a return nine years in the making. “It’s been nearly 10 years since my last visit to Abu Dhabi, when I played with the Indian national team against Pakistan, and the destination has really grown a lot over this period. I love the hospitality here, and people are very kind,” said Raina. “To be honest being here today was such a wonderful experience. We had the best time here.”
The Indian cricket icon went on to encourage fans to cheer on the team during Friday’s highly anticipated match clash. “I hope each and every family will enjoy each and every game over the next few days. We want all our fans to come and enjoy the matches, and I hope they will love this event.”
It was the second visit to Abu Dhabi and Ferrari World Abu Dhabi for CSK’s batsman Francois ‘Faf’ du Plessis - Captain of the South African National team. And ‘Marathon Man’ outpaced his teammates as he decided to take a second spin on the theme park’s main attraction. “The Formula Rossa was definitely the highlight of our visit! It’s the world’s fastest rollercoaster, but it’s also the most pleasurable ride I’ve been on. I’ve spoken to quite a lot of the guys and they feel the same – the most extreme ride but also the most enjoyable. I had to do it two times in a row because it was so good! And it’s my second time here so it’s a really enjoyable experience.”
Sharing his excitement to be back in the emirate Faf explained: “Abu Dhabi is a bit of a hidden gem, as once you get here there’s so much to do, and the weather is really good, there’s a waterpark just across the road that’s nice in the heat, and it’s a really nice place to come and have a holiday, so I really enjoy the experience.”
As the team passed the theme park’s Midway Games, bowler Mohit Sharma challenged his team mates Suresh Raina and fast-medium bowler Matt Henry of New Zealand to an impromptu game of ‘Peel Out Pitch’. Sharma’s gamble paid off, as after an intense period of full length bowling through tyres, he was crowned the bowler king. Of his victory Sharma exclaimed: “It was wonderful! For me it was the highlight of our visit.”
Excited cricket fans couldn’t believe their eyes as the sports stars leisurely walked through the theme park, and eagerly cheered the team on when spotting them on the rides, chanting “CSK! CSK!” For some fans it was a dream come true getting up close and personal with the athletes.
For the Mundra family visiting from Mumbai it is a memory that will last for a long time, as they got a family photo with their hero Suresh Raina: “I brought my wife Monisha, and our kids Mradul and Mihika for a day of fun and excitement, but never dreamed we would see such superstars, let alone get to take a photo with them!”
Another happy snapper who got a photo with his idols was tour guide Vishal Saluja of Royal Arabia who had brought a group of visitors from Dubai for a full day of activities and sightseeing in Abu Dhabi: “We bring many visitors to experience ‘The History & Mystery of Abu Dhabi’. How I got to meet these cricket icons today is part of the mystery of Abu Dhabi. I cannot explain in words how excited I am to get a picture with them here today!”

IPL and Twitter partner to bring trailblazing real-time interactive experiences to fans
Initiatives include the "Twitter IPL Calendar", #IPLMagic, "IPL Pulse" and much more
After their groundbreaking partnership in 2013, IPL & Twitter are set to unveil a new gold standard of live, interactive, conversational experiences for cricket fans globally, with a partnership that will be seamlessly integrated on-air, on-ground and online.
Twitter IPL Calendar
Even before the Pepsi IPL 2014 starts in the UAE, fans will be able to set reminders for their favourite matches, by simply tweeting @IPL with the hashtag #Calendar; they will then receive calendar entries for each IPL match on their mobile phone, which will remind the fan of the match's starting time, 10 minutes before the start of each game.
Audiences will also hear the story of IPL-7, as told through Twitter Data, with "IPL Pulse" data visualizations depicted in broadcast highlighting the most buzzing players, conversations, and trends. IPL Pulse will also be available to view on the IPL website during the season. Fans at the stadium can tweet with #PepsiIPL as well and experience the visualization growing larger-than-life on the giant screens.
Best Tweets and Hashtag Battles
As they could last season, fans will continue to have the opportunity to see the best tweets on screen, and vote for their favourite teams and players in the team and player hashtag battles, whose results will be showcased in real-time, throughout the match.
In keeping with the phenomenon of the selfie that has spread from Twitter throughout popular culture, fans tweeting with #IPLselfie this season will have their photos featured on the IPL website.
At the end of every match, fans will be able to receive a personalized photo message with an iconic image from every match of IPL-7 when they tweet to @IPL with #Magic. This will be personalized for every user, with a message by the captain of the team featured in the photo. This will be a global first interactive experience for a sports league at this scale.
Exclusive behind-the-scenes content from the IPL will get a new twist this year, with the SpiderCam turning into a first-person tweeting object, bringing never-before-seen images from the cricket field into the timeline of cricket fans in real-time, through the @IPLSpiderCam Twitter account.
This season will also see the debut of the autographed #TwitterMirror, where players and the members of the winning team will have the ability to share candid messages with fans through customized photos, which will be tweeted out from @IPL. The story of the IPL will also be told through six-second Vine videos through the 2014 season.
Between matches, the @IPL Twitter handle will be regularly taken over by players and commentators to interact 1-on-1 with fans.
Ranjib Biswal, Chairman, IPL Governing Council, said, “IPL has always set the bar high for fan engagement. This next phase of our partnership with Twitter will ensure that fans can not only take in the action this summer but participate in the fun in real-time with unique interactive experiences.”
Rishi Jaitly, India Market Director, Twitter, said, “Twitter is the world's leading mobile information network where users follow, share and experience content that is live, public and conversational. This partnership represents yet another watershed moment at the intersection of Twitter and sports. By bringing together Twitter best practices and innovation at such scale to a global audience, IPL is again truly connecting to the pulse of today's cricket fans. We congratulate them for giving fans around the world meaningful opportunities to discover content, converse and self-express as part of the live, public conversation that is IPL.”
