The Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab may not start as favourites, but they generally punch above their weight and are capable of causing upsets on a regular basis.
Batting is certainly the stronger of disciplines for the hosts; they will expect experienced batsmen – Shane Watson, Rahul Dravid, Ajinkya Rahane and Brad Hodge to power them with big scores. On the other hand, Kings XI Punjab have a very good bowling line-up and they will expect Praveen Kumar, Parvinder Awana, Azhar Mahmood, Ryan Harris and Piyush Chawla to cause a lot of damage with the ball and hope skipper Adam Gilchrist and David Hussey can make big contributions with the bat while the Indian batsmen play around them.
The Rajasthan Royals have the best record among all the teams who’ve played against Kings XI Punjab; they have a success rate of 66.67% having won six off the nine meetings. The Rajasthan Royals defeated Kings XI Punjab when the two teams met in the league phase last season.
Teams chasing have had better results at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. They’ve won 17 of the 26 matches played at the venue.
The Rajasthan Royals will stay put at home after this match and next host the Mumbai Indians on April 17. Kings XI Punjab meanwhile head back home and prepare to host the Kolkata Knight Riders on April 16.
Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders take on an upbeat Sunrisers Hyderabad in match 17 of Pepsi IPL 2013.
The defending champions have been slow to get off the blocks; though they won their opening match against the Delhi Daredevils, they came second best in their matches against the Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have won three off their four matches and sit among the top four teams in the table. In their most recent outing, they held their nerve to win a low-scoring contest against the Delhi Daredevils by three wickets.

Batting in T20 isn’t as it once was. When batsmen would go hard at the ball from the word go. These days we see batsmen willing to spend time in the middle before opening up their shoulders. KKR will expect skipper Gautam Gambhir or Jacques Kallis to hold fort at one end allowing the other stroke-makers in the team to go after the bowling. Gambhir and Kallis themselves are capable of playing the big shots, and it would be immensely helpful to the team if either of them bat to the end.
The Sunrisers will expect the Indian batsmen in the line-up to bat around Cameron White and Thisara Perera, both of who are capable of causing a lot of damage.
On the bowling front, how the KKR batsmen handle Dale Steyn’s four overs and how many they score off those four overs will have a definite bearing on the match. The match also promises an interesting battle between the two spinners – Amit Mishra and Sunil Narine, both of who have been in outstanding form recently.
The Kolkata Knight Riders will be meeting the Hyderabad franchise for the first time in their new avatar as Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The defending champions will have fond memories of playing against the Hyderabad franchise at home, for they have won three of the four meetings.
In the Sunrisers’ previous match against the Delhi Daredevils, Dale Steyn bowled 17 dot balls in his four-over spell.
The Kolkata Knight Riders have conceded the highest percentage of runs through boundaries in Pepsi IPL 2013; 60.93% of the runs they have conceded this season have been through fours and sixes.
Pune Warriors India have conceded the fewest sixes in Pepsi IPL 2013 – three.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ next fixture will be against the Kings XI Punjab on April 16, while the Sunrisers Hyderabad will head to Pune for their return clash against Pune Warriors India on April 17.
