Despite floundering at six for 29, afterKumar Sangakkara, back at the helm, opted to bat, the SRH lower-order fired on all cylinders to help set-up a competitive target for the home team to chase.
However the top-order collapse meant that the visitors were a few runs short and their woes were compounded by an on song Shane Watson who blunted the Dale Steyn-led bowling attack. The team which has defended scores of around 120-odd earlier in the Pepsi Indian Premier League 2013, were at sea as the Royals’ sailed to victory at their fortress.
After the loss, Cameron White who made way for Sangakkara in the match spoke about the team’s performance and lauded Sammy’s knock that gave the team a chance to put up a fight after the top and middle order caved in to James Faulkner andAjit Chandila.
Excerpts from the brief interview:
On whether the team derived any confidence from their previous antics while coming out to defend?
Yes, we think we needed to get some early wickets. We had got one and it would have been nice to get a couple more but that did not happen. Shane Watson batted unbelievably well and Rahul played well upfront. So the credit has to go to Shane and Rahul.
On losing wickets early on and Darren Sammy’s knock to revive the innings
It was a great innings wasn’t it. After that start it was a really good batting effort by the tail to get to 140-odd. Darren Sammy was excellent again and he was well supported by Mishy (Amit Mishra) and Ashish Reddy; as well so that was good.
What went wrong with the batting besides some poor shot selection?
There was a bit of swing early on. I think initially they bowled well up front.
Whether batting is an area of concern?
Yes I guess so. I think we need to step up and take responsibility as individuals with the bat and make sure we put up some better scores for our bowlers to defend.
On having one of the best bowling attacks and some of the best bowling coaches to guide the side
Yes that’s right. The bowlers have done a great job led by our bowling coach Waqar Younis, who is doing fantastically well. Dale Steyn is leading our attack, backed up by our two leg-spinners as well. Mishy has been great and Karan has been excellent too.
