Sanga’s joined DC squad: Lehman

Coach unsure about regular skipper’s availability against MI

Humbled by Chennai Super Kings in their opening game of IPL 2012, Deccan Chargers now take on Mumbai Indians in another tough encounter at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium here in Vizag on Monday.

The Chargers, who put up a fight in the early part of the contest, gave away too many runs to CSK at the end. To add to their bowling largesse, they put up a poor batting display that left them ruing a 74-run defeat at the hands of the defending champions. Speaking at the pre-match press conference before their game against Mumbai, Chargers coach Darren Lehmann spoke about the loss in front of their home fans.

“It was disappointing. I thought we fought really well for the first half of the game or the first 16 overs and then lost it towards the end. But the batting was more disappointing, to be fair. We got off to a reasonable start. We were about two for 70 [-odd] off 10 [overs] and then just got blown away towards the end. We should have batted better than we did,” he conceded.

Another factor which played a big hand in the Chargers’ loss was the absence of regular skipper Kumar Sangakkara, who was away on international duty. Lehmann, however, confirmed that Sangakkara had joined the team, but wasn’t completely sure about the Sri Lankan’s availability for tomorrow’s game.

“He has arrived as we speak. We’ll just have to see whether he plays tomorrow or not.”

The Chargers were also without the services of Amit Mishra for their first game, but, as Lehmann suggested, the Indian leg-spinner could be included in the playing eleven for the match against MI.

“Amit Mishra is in Bengaluru today. He is flying back now. He has to get some clearance from the NCA. It will be touch-and-go whether we play him or not. He had shin, shoulder [injuries] and [a] hernia operation.”

Mishra’s injury was the latest setback for the Chargers side who are already without Ishant Sharma for the whole of IPL 2012; the paceman has recently undergone ankle surgery. Lehmann, though, took an optimistic view, saying, “We can’t do anything about injuries. You can’t control that. The way I look at it is that it gives the young guys a chance.”

Talking about other changes to the Deccan squad, besides the possibility of including Sangakkara and Mishra, Lehmann said, “I think we’ll probably go with another spinner considering how Mumbai [Indians] shape up with their side. We look at who we’re playing all the time.”

When asked about how he planned to help his side overcome the mighty MI, Lehmann said, “We’ll try and win tomorrow night for a start.”
