That MS Dhoni is an ardent football follower is a fact well documented. But little would the Indian cricket captain have known that his leadership qualities have earned him fans within the game he gave up for cricket.

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, who is in India to promote football, admitted having followed the 2011 World Cup and praised Dhoni the leader.

"I know your captain though I cannot pronounce his name. I followed the last (cricket) World Cup. The Indian team were the Champions. I think he (Dhoni) is a very good leader.

The 2011 World Cup was also the tournament that introduced Drogba to cricket. "It took me time to understand the game. It is very long and sometimes it goes on for days. But after the World Cup, I find it interesting now."

The footballer from Ivory Coast was in India to play a promotional football game with some Indian cricketers as a part of a commercial campaign. Dhoni played the match along with his Chennai Super Kings team-mate Suresh Raina, Royal Challengers Bangalore's Virat Kohli and Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan Singh. Former Indian football captain Baichung Bhutia also participated.

The Indian captain tweeted enthusiastically about the match and the football star he played with. “Done with the Pepsi football match. It was good fun. Everyone played well,” he wrote

About Drogba, he said, “Drogba was really sweet and polite. It was nice of him to play for a while with the boys. Baichung played really well.”

Dhoni had special words for his Team India team mates as well. “Virat's goalkeeping in the tie breaker was fantastic. He and Raina together played well… A must-watch is Bhajju pa’s goal,” he tweeted.
