PWI’s ‘Iceman’ believes team spirit can take his team a long way in IPL 2012

Pune 09 April 2012
His icy exterior belies his inner aggression. Marlon Samuels is turning out to be Pune Warriors India’s talisman in IPL 2012. A batsman with fierce batting ability and a constant threat with the ball in hand, Samuels is quickly becoming PWI’s go-to guy. The 31-year-old Jamaican put on an impressive show worthy of the occasion as the Warriors marked the opening of the swanky new Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium with an equally shining win over KXIP.
With two wins in two games, the Warriors are showing what they are capable of after a rather disappointing opening show in IPL 2011. The new stadium has ushered in a new sense of enthusiasm amongst the players, and Samuels is hoping to give the fans a show to remember.
On pacing his innings
It’s T20, so you have to pace your innings. It’s just not about 6s or big hitting. You have to understand the situation and play your card accordingly.
On PWI’s biggest asset
As a team, we fell short last year and this year the spirit is very high. We train together and it’s a better unit. We are discussing cricket more and eager to learn more.
On skipper Sourav Ganguly’s influence on the side
He is one of the India’s greatest captains and very experienced also. He does not have age by his side, but he is still delivering and making some good decisions. He is a very sharp captain.
On PWI’s new state-of-the-art stadium
It’s a wonderful stadium. I don’t have words to explain; the atmosphere is great. The entrance is not finished [constructed] yet. It’s lovely, so one can imagine how it is going to be when it’s fully constructed. We are playing the first game in such a beautiful stadium and our fans have been awesome. We have to put up a good show for them.
On PWI’s ambitions in IPL 2012
Yeah, definitely. Our ambition is to win the tournament, and for that we will have to play some very good cricket.
On PWI’s bowling attack
It’s going on good. Captain keeps changing the bowler and not let batsman get used to one bowler and it’s been working.
On the ‘Iceman’ moniker
They have given me this name because I am cool and gel around pretty well; but it’s just a name.
