After the eight-wicket drubbing against Mumbai Indians in their opening game of IPL 2012, the Chennai Super Kings bounced back nicely. They registered a handsome 74-run win against the Deccan Chargers. Despite the defeat in the opening match, CSK played the same side against DC, thereby resisting the temptation to chop and change after a big defeat.

All-rounder, Faf du Plessis, who scored a 25-ball 39 in CSK’s win today, spoke on the game in an exclusive interview to

Good to get a win after the loss against MI?

Yeah, we needed it. After the first game, it was a slow start for us. We needed a convincing win today and we came out and did that.

Was there a temptation to make any changes in the side after the batting failure against MI?

Not at all. This is T20; you are going to get disappointments. It’s a long tournament, so if you can just string a couple of good performances together over a long time, it’s what you want. We have to get a bit of consistency in the team. Players need to get used to each other, the roles that they are playing; and that showed today.

MS Dhoni said he would have liked to bowl first. Was the dew a factor at all?

No, not that much. It was a little wet. If you put runs on the board, it puts the pressure on them. We did that today. We actually wanted to bowl first like you said, because we saw the wicket was a bit spongy in the beginning, [and] we wanted to make use of those conditions.

CSK has a lot of all-rounders. Is it fair to say that if they perform, CSK are sure to do well?

That’s what makes us a strong side. We have batting till No.9, and we have got plenty of bowling options. That’s the depth we have got. Fortunately, we are making use of that good form.

Is there any area that you want to improve upon after today’s performance?

You can always improve. But I think today was a really good game. We played the first half of the game really well. We put pressure on their bowlers all the time, and also, there were stages where we just needed to take singles and we did that as well. Later, we bowled them out cheaply. They got [off] to a quick start, but we pulled it back nicely.
