TheKings XI Punjab fought hard to keep themselves in the hunt till last stages of their match against theDelhi Daredevils. Leading from the front, KXIP skipper David Hussey has helped them seal a few wins. With an unbeaten 40-run knock the Australian all-rounder, helped his team reach 136 in 20 overs, which proved to be too less of a target for DD. Speaking to iplt20.com the Hussey spoke about his team and reflected on their five-wicket loss against KXIP.
Excerpts from his interview:
On his batting form
I wouldn’t say amazing. It would have nicer to score 60 or 70 and get out off the last ball, but I am happy with my form, and hopefully, it continues and I contribute to winning games for our team.
On whether 137 was good enough target for DD
No not really. We were [about] 20 runs short. Although up to the last couple of overs, we were in the game, but yes, we are about 20 runs short. It was disappointing. But we have got two more games to right the wrongs and we will see what happens.
On Parvinder Awana’s spell that got them breakthroughs and a chance to defend their modest total
Fantastic player! He has been brilliant. He has been a great find for us. Hopefully, he has big future not only with Indian cricket, but with the Kings XI Punjab team. He competes [well] and I enjoy his company.
On KXIP opener Mandeep Singh
He is very talented. He has a big future not only in T20 cricket, but in all forms of the game. He has a massive future and I will like to see him play the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne.
On whether he is enjoying captaincy
Yes I am. It is a fantastic franchise to captain. I really enjoy playing with our bunch of boys. They give everything and they don’t take a backward step and they always fight to the very last over.
On motivating his teammates, who have relatively less international experience
It’s all about pride. All the boys want to play in the finals and that’s our common goal and it is pretty easy to captain a group of guys that want to play all the time.
On Adam Gilchrist’s role
He has been fantastic. He takes care of everything off the field. He makes the team run very smoothly and all the boys idolize him; he is that sort of figure for us.
On IPL 2012
It is the best IPL I have ever been a part of. [...] [Almost] every game comes down to the wire. I have actually watched every IPL game on the television and been amazed [...].
On whether close games are becoming a trend this season
Yes everybody, every team knows how to really execute their skills at the backend of the game and we are no different. We just like to keep winning.[...].
On elder brother Michael Hussey’s knock against the Kolkata Knight Riders
He played really well. The old boy is still playing, still going and still doing it. Hopefully, we knock Chennai Super Kings out [...].
With four wickets down and 100 runs to get, Naman Ojha helped the Delhi Daredevils wrest the initiative back with a crucial 58-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Mahela Jayawardene. The wicketkeeper-batsman played a mature innings to keep the home team in the hunt with a 29-ball 34 (3x4; 2x6).
In a brief chat with iplt20.com, Naman Ojha spoke about the team effort that helped his side beat Kings XI Punjab at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Excerpts from his chat: On his team winning and their position in the points table
We are now safe but we are not complacent. The next game is also important for us. Day after tomorrow, we play against RCB, which is a very good team. We will try to play well against that team [as well]. On the Feroz Shah Kotla wicket
Wicket was pretty nice and the ball was coming on nicely to the bat. Our bowlers did a very good job to restrict them to 136 runs.
On whether the loss of four early wickets put DD under pressure in their run-chase
With three or four wickets down, and you coming in to bat, there is definitely a little pressure. But I thought that I will play my game and I will back myself [to do well] and I have done that. On striking good form and being amongst runs
I am definitely feeling better [about my batting].
On the atmosphere in the dugout when the match was still poised evenly around the 17th over
Mahely [Mahela Jayawardene] was still out there, so we thought he is a senior player and very experienced pro and we knew that he is going to bring us home. So we were sure about that. On Mahela Jayawardene’s innings
He played wonderfully; he is a very experienced player.
On the useful contributions by him and Irfan Pathan
It is a small contribution, but we are very happy that we have contributed to the team’s victory. On their next game against RCB
Now, we will first enjoy this win and tomorrow and day-after we will sit and discuss [about the next match].
