We were enjoying ourselves: Anirudha

CSK batsman recounts his match-winning stand with Albie Morkel and more

Jaipur 11 May 2012
Two identical six-ball 18-run knocks with two sixes and a four apiece by Anirudha Srikkanth and Albie Morkel took the game away from the Rajasthan Royals. With the spots open for the final four in the IPL 2012, the Chennai Super Kings have kept their chances alive by beating the hosts in a cliffhanger here.

Anirudha, in his first game of the season, played a impressive cameo to help his team over the line along with Morkel.

Excerpts from his post-match interview with
On playing his first match of IPL 2012 and contributing to a winning cause

Right now I am just not feeling anything. It is a great feeling to win a match and I am just happy that I could contribute to the victory.

On still being in the reckoning for making it to the playoffs

We just have to win every game [from] now on to make sure that we go through. The best thing we could do right now is look at every game, game-by-game and not look at the overall picture of it. Take it one game at a time, and hopefully, we can make it.

On what was the conversation with Albie Morkel when he came in to bat especially since it was anyone’s game and Shaun Tait and Shane Watson were yet to bowl

[...] The first ball I came in to bat Albie just told me to go out there and enjoy and just express yourself. [...] You don’t have to think everything. And that was the best thing anybody could actually tell you. And Albie made it a lot easier, he hit two sixes and a four and everything [the target] just suddenly seemed gettable. We just took it ball-by-ball after that. We didn’t think anything. We were just enjoying ourselves out there. It was just like having a hit and it just worked out well.

On the message from the dressing room if any

No, [I was] just told [to] go out there [in the middle] and have fun. With 47 required of four overs, you don’t get any messages you just have to go out there and hit [the ball].

On whether it was good toss to win

Surely it was a good toss to win. Initially, the ball was moving around a bit and our bowlers bowled well initially and obviously they had to cope up with coming on to the field and off the field [due to intermittent rains] not knowing how many overs they are going to play [...].

On Ben Hilfenhaus coming into the side

Up front, you can see that Dougie Bollinger and Nuwan Kulsekara had done so well for us in the past. But unfortunately, they had to miss out because Hifly is also a great bowler. So when you have three good bowlers in your team, you just have to just have to pick and Hilfy is doing a good job for us right now.

On the score they were looking restrict RR to

We weren’t looking at any target because we didn’t know whether we were going to get a good game or not. So many times you came in and off the field. So all we were trying to do was to keep the [runs] to a minimum and it worked out. 126 runs seem like 140 on this wicket but still we had bat well to get there.
